Issue No.10: “Everyday Punishments”
Jono Verrall (born 1995) is a photographic artist based in New Zealand. After studying fine arts in Wellington and later living in Melbourne, Australia, he relocated to his quiet hometown of Nelson, New Zealand. Shooting on 35mm film, he explores the experience of returning from the unrelenting and often chaotic life in a large city to the slower-paced, largely unchanging ways of a small South Island town. His work centres around our relationship with place; belonging to it, being ‘from’ it. Humility and honesty are core tenets of his practice. The parameters of ‘high’ and ‘low’ art are front of mind, and he aims to produce work that is accessible and enjoyable by those from the communities he depicts, as well as appealing to his urban contemporaries.
