2019 Barren Poetry Contest

WHAT: Inaugural Barren Poetry Contest

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: April 30, 2019 at 11:59 EST. (CLOSED)

ENTRY FEE: $5 per poem

AWARDS: 1st Place (cash award of 40% of total entry fees; poem published in June issue of Barren Magazine); 2nd Place (cash award of 30% of total entry fees; poem published in June issue of Barren Magazine); 3rd Place (20% of total entry fees; poem published in June issue of Barren Magazine)

1st Place Prize: $550
2nd Place Prize: $400
3rd PlacePrize: $250

GUEST JUDGE: Marissa Glover

Marissa Glover teaches writing at Saint Leo University, hosts the Friday Night Open Mic event series, and shares her thoughts more than necessary, which she considers a form of charitable giving. If it counted as a tax deduction, she'd be rich. Marissa is co-editor for Orange Blossom Review and poetry editor at Barren Press. Her poetry has appeared in The Lascaux Review, After the Pause, Stoneboat Literary Journal, War, Literature & the Arts, and SWWIM Every Day, among others.   • Poems must be written in English to be eligible
  • 1 poem = 1 entry ($5 per entry — no entry limit)
  • Maximum entry length: one page single-spaced
  • Please use a generic font; we prefer Times New Roman 12 pt
  • Only original poetry that has not been published in print or online journals will be considered. (self-published work in blogs, chapbooks or on social media will be considered)
  • Please, no ‘After’ poems.
  • SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS ARE ACCEPTABLE (they just can’t be in print prior to you entering them in the contest).


  • Purchase your entries via the form provided
  • You will receive an immediate confirmation email receipt with a Receipt # and further instructions, which include the following:
    • Email address for where to send your entry
    • Email each entry as a separate .doc or .docx attachment containing only titles and text
    • Title your submission email as follows: “[Receipt #] [Title]”
    • In the body of your email, please include ONLY your name, the title(s) of your entries, and your email address
  • You will receive an immediate confirmation email when we receive your submission
  • All readings will be without author identifiers


To ensure partiality, all current and former Barren Magazine and Barren Press Masthead volunteers are ineligible to participate. In addition, close friends, relatives, and students (including former) of the guest judge must be excluded from the contest. Everyone else, including those who have been previously published in Barren Magazine, is eligible for this contest.


We will formally announce the winning 3 poems and their authors toward the end of May, whereupon we will either mail checks or transfer winners’ awards via PayPal thereafter.
